Jeff Herrick is a soil scientist with extensive experience working with producers and policymakers to increase long-term cropland and rangeland productivity at local to global scales. During his 25 years with the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, he published numerous highly-cited articles on soil health, resilience, and rangeland ecology and management. During that period, he served as lead author for International Resource Panel reports on optimizing land use based on sustainable land potential, and the co-benefits of land restoration for multiple societal objectives. He led methods development and supported implementation of the US national rangeland health assessment and monitoring systems, as well as a mobile app that provides non-soil scientists access to global soil information and allows them to easily monitor land health. His policy experience includes leading UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) negotiations on science and technology for the United States, and serving as senior advisor to the US Special Envoy for Global Food Security.
