Jose W. Fernandez was the Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment during the Biden administration. As the administration’s top economic diplomat, Fernandez stood at the center of the administration’s international policies related to economic growth, trade and investment, energy, agriculture, technology, sanctions, the oceans and the environment, and outreach to the private sector. In the first five years of the Obama Administration, Fernandez served as Assistant Secretary for Economic, Energy and Business Affairs. Prior to his work in government, Mr. Fernandez was as an attorney in New York advising U.S. and foreign companies in cross-border financings, mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures in emerging markets, Europe and the United States, as well as on foreign investment regulations, sanctions and commercial disputes. Mr. Fernandez was also a director of Iberdrola S.A. (IBE.MC), one of the largest renewable energy companies in the world, and Avangrid Inc. (NYSE:AGR).
